Resin Bound and Why It Matters
Why We Recommend Resin Bound over Resin Bonded
“Resin driveway” is used as a catch-all phrase, but there are two very different systems:
-
Resin bound – Stone and resin are mixed together in a forced-action mixer and then hand trowelled onto the surface.
-
Permeable (water drains through)
-
Flat finish
-
SUDS-compliant when laid on the right base
-
Great for reducing standing water and surface run-off
-
-
Resin bonded – Resin is spread onto a base and loose stone is scattered over the top.
-
Non-porous
-
Much rougher underfoot
-
Stones can work loose over time
-
More similar to a coated surface than a true permeable driveway
-
For most homes in and around Loughborough, resin bound is the better long-term choice. It creates a permeable driveway that helps deal with heavy rain, works well with local drainage and supports SUDS-compliant surfacing at the front of the property.

At Groundzman, we aim to go with resin bound driveways in Leicestershire as a whole, because they offer the best mix of looks, drainage and durability for our clients.

Our 5-Step Resin Driveway Installation Process
Any resin bound surface is only as good as what sits underneath it. This is where Groundzman’s groundworks come in – it’s what we do every day across landscaping, patios and driveways. Here’s how a typical driveway installation process works:

-
Site survey, design & planning
We look at parking needs, levels, existing materials, drainage and access. This is also when we discuss stone blends, edging and any extra features (steps, paths, borders). -
Site excavation & clearance
Old tarmac, concrete, gravel or broken blocks are dug out and removed from site. We deal with all excavation and waste, so you’re not left with skips and piles of rubble. -
Sub-base installation
We install and compact a suitable sub-base, often MOT Type 1 or similar, and, where needed, lay a suitable concrete or asphalt base. Correct sub-base preparation is what keeps the driveway level, crack-free and firm under the car’s wheels. -
Edging & drainage details
We fit edging blocks, kerbs or setts to frame the resin, and add channels or soakaways if required. This is particularly important on local clay soil, helping the surface cope with heavy rain and stopping water from pooling near the house. -
The resin mix & hand trowelling
Aggregate and resin are blended in a forced-action mixer to give an even coating on every stone. The mix is then poured, spread and trowelled. After curing, you’re left with a flat, consistent surface ready for everyday use.

Throughout the build, we keep access as practical as possible and leave the area tidy at the end of each day.
Resin Driveway Costs in Loughborough
How much should a resin driveway cost?
There isn’t a single price that fits all cases. The cost of resin driveways in Loughborough and the are depends on:
-
Size of the area (total m²)
-
Whether we’re using the existing base or building from scratch
-
How much excavation and waste removal is needed
-
Edging choices and any extra features (steps, paths, borders)
-
Access for machines and materials
You’ll see national “price per m²” figures online, but they rarely account for real-world issues like poor sub-bases, tree roots or drainage problems.
Rather than guessing, we prefer to visit, measure up and then give you a free, no-obligation quote based on your site.

What are the downsides of resin driveways?
We get asked here and there what’s the potential downsides:

-
They can’t go straight over loose gravel
The base needs to be sound. Loose, moving material underneath will cause cracks and movement. -
Poor preparation shows later
If someone cuts corners on excavation or sub-base, issues may not show up straight away – they appear months down the line as dips, cracks or standing water. -
They’re hard to patch invisibly
Small repairs are possible, but it’s difficult to match a resin surface perfectly, so any future patch rarely disappears completely.

Groundzman’s strength is in the groundwork side – we spend the time on preparation so your resin bound surface has the best chance of a long life.
