Most of what we build is timber sleepers, brick, or concrete block with a rendered or stone face. Sleepers are the quickest route and sit well in relaxed gardens and raised beds. Brick costs more but matches the house, which matters on front gardens especially. Blockwork is what we reach for on taller walls where strength counts. Height, budget and what the wall butts up against usually decide it - we'll talk it through at the survey.

Retaining wall replacement and repair
Old walls lean for a reason: rotten sleepers, no drainage, footings that were never deep enough. Patching that kind of failure is money down the drain, so we take the wall down and build it again from the footing up. If yours is sound apart from one dodgy section, we'll say so - sometimes rebuilding a couple of metres is all it needs.

Steps, terraces and raised beds
Steep plots usually want more than one wall. We terrace them properly, with steps between levels and raised beds built into the run, so planting sits at a height your back will thank you for. Everything's set out together - walls, steps, paving - which is how the garden ends up feeling like one job instead of three.

How We Build Retaining Walls
Ask us what makes a wall last and we'll point at the bits you can't see. The face of the wall - sleepers, brick, whatever you pick - is the easy part. Footings, drainage and backfill decide whether it's still straight in ten years.

1. Free site survey
We come out, measure up, and have a proper look at the levels, the soil and where water goes when it rains. You tell us what you want the space for. We tell you honestly what the wall needs to do, what we'd build and what it's likely to cost.

2. Excavation and groundwork
Out comes the soft stuff, down to solid ground. Loughborough clay moves about more than people think, and a wall sat on top of it without digging through first won't stay straight. It's the unglamorous bit of groundworks, and it's the bit that matters most.

3. Footings and drainage
A concrete footing goes in, sized to the wall's height. Then the part that saves the wall: a perforated land drain at the base and clean gravel behind, so rainwater gets away instead of building up and pushing. Water is what knocks walls over. Give it an escape route and the wall stands for decades.

4. Wall construction
Up goes the wall - sleepers, brick or block, built to line and level, with weep holes and reinforcement where it needs them. Corners and steps are set out as we go rather than forced in at the end.

5. Backfilling and finishing
We backfill in layers and compact as we go, then finish the top ready for turf, planting or paving. Rubbish off site, garden left tidy. You'd be surprised how many crews skip that last part.

How much does a garden retaining wall cost in Loughborough?
Honest answer: the ground decides more than the material does. Height and length matter, but so do access (can we get a digger in?), what's coming out, and how much drainage is needed. A metre-high sleeper wall round a raised bed is a different job to a two-metre wall holding back a whole bank. We don't guess - the site visit is free and the quote is a proper one.
How long does a retaining wall last?
Brick or block on a decent footing with drainage behind it? Decades. Treated sleepers less so, but you should still get many years out of them. When walls fail young, nine times out of ten it's skimped drainage or shallow footings, not the material you can see.
Do I need planning permission for a retaining wall?
Most of the time, no - garden walls count as normal garden works. It gets murkier if the wall's tall, hard against a boundary or the pavement, or holding back next door's ground, and there can be party wall chat with the neighbour. Best to check first, and we'll point you at the right questions to ask.
Which material is best for a retaining wall?
There's no universal winner. Sleepers go up fast and look right in relaxed gardens. Brick matches the house but costs more. Block is the strong one for taller walls, and you can render or clad it. We'll show you what each does to the price at the survey, because that's usually the decider.
Does a retaining wall need drainage?
Yes, every time. Water sitting behind a wall is what pushes it over, and we've rebuilt enough failed walls to know. Ours all get a perforated drain and gravel behind, with weep holes where needed. If the garden's boggy in general, have a look at our drainage solutions too.
Can you repair a leaning or rotten wall, or does it need replacing?
Depends why it went. Sound footing, sound drainage, one damaged section - yes, that can be rebuilt on its own. But if the wall's moving because the base was never right, repairing it is like repointing a house with subsidence. We'll tell you straight which one you've got.
